Short Answer Questions (SAQ)

Time: 40 minutes (20 minutes per question)

  • Focus on what the question asks

Document-Based Question (DBQ)

Time: 60 minutes (includes 15-minute reading period)
1 question
  • Develop an argument supported by analysis of historical evidence
  • Use at least 6 documents
  • Provide context for historical situation
  • Include outside evidence beyond documents
  • Analyze point of view in 3 documents
  • Analyze historical complexity or nuance
  • Write a clear thesis
  • Use document evidence to support argument

Long Essay Question (LEQ)

Time: 40 minutes
1 question (choose from 3 options)
  • Write a clear thesis
  • Support argument with specific historical evidence
  • Provide historical context
  • Demonstrate complexity of historical argument
  • Show historical reasoning (comparison, causation, or continuity/change)
  • Address the entire time period specified

  2. Section II, Part A: Short Answer (2 questions, 40 minutes)
